Water Consumption Analysis
  • Currently, only the plants of the packaging business have acquired the water right to use groundwater, mainly covering for the water in air conditioners and day-to-day uses.
  • The beverage business's main production of beverage-filling OEM plants has significant water demand.
  • In 2021, the aseptic 3rd plant included in statistics.
  • In 2022, THC's total water consumption increased by 5.17% from 2021 because of increased production capacity.
  • In 2022, total water consumption dropped by 3% from 2021.

Packaging Business (water consumption(ton) / NT$ million revenue)

The packaging business's main water usages sources are for air-conditioning and domestic-use water. Since 2020 THC has expanded the plant, so water consumption has gradually increased. When the government implemented water conservation measures,

2022 Taichung 1st plant decreased by

Beverage Business (water consumption (tons)/finished goods (kiloliter))

The beverage business has added an Aseptic 3rd Beverage-filling Plant. The total product volume increased, but the water usage was almost the same. By Through stable operations, the Aseptic 1st and 2nd plants maintain the water usage standard as last year.

The entire WUR index dropped from

Total Wastewater Discharge
  • The main reason is that there was no water rationing in 2022, so the Company's total wastewater discharged increased by 1% compared to 2021.
  • The main sources of wastewater in the packaging business are domestic wastewater and from the cooling water towers.
  • The main sources of wastewater in the beverage business are from rinsing process equipment, replenishment water for cooling cycle systems, tea sludge dewatering, domestic-use water from offices, and some product or product inspection waste liquid consumed in the process.

The wastewater is treated to meet the discharge criteria and is then funneled into the sewer in the Taichung Industrial Park and Chungkang Branch of Export Processing Zone which flows into the Kamachat River and Anliang Port (inner harbor of Taichung port). As no wastewater is directly released into the environment other than rainwater, it poses a low impact on the river environment in terms of wastewater discharge. Moreover, we have formulated relevant emergency response procedures, and perform water leakage training and drills on a regular basis to avoid pollution caused by abnormal discharges.

Water Conservation Measures

To better understand the water consumption in the plant, the Beverage Business began its water footprint inventory in 2018 by analyzing the hot spots of the usage in the plant to manage water resources and plan water-saving solutions. Meanwhile, we also participated in the ISO 46001 Water Resource Efficiency Management System in 2021, initiated by the Ministry of Economic Affairs. By doing so, we hoped to achieve the optimal utilization of water resources through the verification guidance, while conducting water vulnerability assessments and establishing a water resource management plan with the clients. Based on the evaluation, we plan on recycling water during dry seasons and purchasing water according to our established budget.

Risk Introduction Mitigation
Regional Water Sources:
  1. Shortage of drinking water during dry season.
  2. The water intensity of the aseptic beverage-filling plants accounts for 39.39% of the total in Taichung Port Technology Industrial Park.
  1. Plan preventative measures and always be on the lookout for the latest water shortage notice of the government.
  2. Coordinate with the customers to adjust production capacity after the yellow light (indicating water pressure reduction) is turned on by the Water Resources Agency to ensure sufficient resources.
  3. Monitor the water inflow into the Taichung Port Technology Industrial Park water-tank and adjust the capacity of the production lines.
  4. Coordinate with the customers to increase the single batch production quality for lower product change.
  5. Find external water sources.
  6. Recycle and re-use water (water saving project).
Water supply stability and water quality:
Construction or typhoon causes ruptures of regional water pipelines, resulting in abnormal water quality or water shortage.
  1. Investigate the problem of abnormal water quality ASAP, report to Taiwan Water Corporation and require improvement.
  2. Internal water quality control: based on the raw water turbidity or shortage of water supply.
  3. Find external water sources.
Initiation of Water Conservation Charge
  1. Water recycling program: utilize ROR, reuse effluent, recycle the water generated during production for cleaning.
  2. Recycle and re-use water (water saving project).
  3. Coordinate with the customers to increase the single batch production quality for lower product change.
  4. Promote for the green factory certification.
Interested parties - water quality and the environment Meet the discharge criteria of the wastewater treatment system of Taichung Port Technology Industrial Park: 250 mg/L of Biochemical oxygen demand, 450 mg/L of Chemical Oxygen Demand, 250 mg/L of suspended solids and other requirements of effluent quality.
